Learning Packs

A number of packs have been published to support the learning of organisations and individual practitioners within services for people with learning disabilities. These packs act as sources of knowledge as well as skill development tools via the practical exercises and materials contained within them.

• Developing Supervision in Teams

  • This pack has been produced with support from a Department of Health Shared Training Grant. The pack describes the process through which a structure for supervision can be established in a variety of settings. The material was piloted with staff from services for people with a Learning Disability. The content includes: Purposes of supervision; Methods of supervision; Managerial and clinical supervision; Anti-discriminatory practice; Uses of formal and informal supervision; Practical arrangements for supervision; Use of written contracts; Giving and receiving feedback; How to use supervision to improve planning of service delivery; Staff support; Staff development. The text includes exercises, questionnaires and suggested formats to ensure a practical and thorough approach to the development of supervision. If you don't know where to start with supervision, or have started but have become stuck, or just want to improve the process, then this publication will be of use to you.

• Audit in Teams – The Contribution of Integrated Care Pathways in Learning Disability Services

  • This is the second in a series of resource packages designed to support collaborative working and partnerships. Funded by the Department of Health the package describes an innovative approach to developing audit practices using integrated care pathways (ICP’s) developed within the team. This process serves to promote research and evidence based practice and thus supports clinical effectiveness and governance strategies.
  • The package also addresses the need to involve users in developing services as well as key issues in effective change management within services. The material is relevant to non-professional, uni and multi-professional teams, within and across organisations. As well as content that relates to the above areas the pack includes examples of ICP’s and ICP documentation, references, useful reading, workshop formats (1-3 days), activities and overheads.

• Managing Risk in Services for People with a Learning Disability

  • A contemporary package that addresses issues of risk management within the value frameworks implicit in learning disability service provision.
  • Risk Management is thus addressed across quality of life, quality of care and quality of service dimensions.
  • Utilising six quality standards the pack focuses on the individuals’ interactions with the service provider and the organisations’ structure and processes. Each of the quality standards is explored using exemplars, sample documentation and structure charts.
  • The pack also includes teaching plans related to each standard as well as a unitary teaching plan for the whole package. This makes the pack extremely flexible in its application and it may be effectively utilised by individual practitioners, managers and/or staff development personnel.

• Thinking about Learning Disability

  • This pack is produced in partnership with The Mental Health Foundation and is to be used by anyone who would like to learn and understand more about Learning Disability and the issues facing some people with a Learning Disability. The pack would be relevant to anyone thinking about working in services for people with a Learning Disability, such as college/university students, volunteers or new employees or alternatively those needing to develop their existing knowledge or skills. The content introduces readers to the nature of Learning Disability, service development and the lives of people with a Learning Disability. It then considers the application of O'Brien's Five Accomplishments of Sharing places, Choice, Competence, Respect and Relationships. The pack may be used for personal study or to run a structured programme for colleagues. It comes complete with materials that may be photocopied for the use of others.

• Assessing and Developing Early Communication Skills in Children and Adults with Multi-Sensory Impairments – ACT1

  • This unique pack is designed to provide a day's learning activities with optional follow-up for a variety of users (teachers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists). The pack includes Assessing Communication Together materials, a tutor’s package, a participant’s package, overhead transparencies, and other visual presentation materials. The pack has been successfully piloted with a variety of professionals working with clients who are multiply handicapped or who have multi-sensory impairments.
