Courses

Our portfolio is open to all practitioners working with or having an interest in the lives of people with learning disabilities. This will include a range of professionals, formal and informal carers, and students from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. The portfolio includes a variety of programmes that can be delivered locally at request, as well as the opportunity to design new education and training programmes to match existing provision within a range of service settings.

Visiting Workshops - Developing Programmes

Workshops can be provided which are customised to the needs of the organisation concerned and delivered at a location that is of most convenience to them. Interested organisations will be put in touch with a consultant with whom individualised workshops can be negotiated. Such workshops have been delivered previously to a variety of health and social care organisations and to groups of varying sizes.

Examples are given below, but these are to be seen as samples of what might be negotiated by interested parties:

• Understanding Autism

  • Content

  • Intended primarily for staff who work with either children or adults who are identified as autistic or having 'autistic' tendencies. It will also be of relevance though to anyone with an interest in the topic area. The course seeks to increase the knowledge and understanding of participants so that they gain an insight into the difficulties and dilemmas faced by those affected by autism. Through a mix of presentations, discussion, exercises and case studies ideas will be generated for practical work with service users. In addition participants are encouraged to plan for subsequent implementation of the ideas and practices generated. There is scope within the course for participants to influence the content and process as befits their individual needs.

• Developing Supervision in Teams

  • Content

  • Helen and Jenny have both established and run supervision schemes based on the course structure and have trained staff within both health and social service settings. This course provides for Supervision of staff in a variety of settings particularly concerned with people with learning disabilities. As well as providing a means to monitor and direct the work being done, the supervision model used also enables the provision of support to staff and the development of their skills and knowledge. Opportunity is provided for participants to enhance their knowledge base alongside practice of their supervision skills. Participants also receive written materials that support the implementation of Supervision in their own workplace.

• Assessing and Developing Early Communication Skills in Children and Adults with Multi-Sensory Impairments

  • Content

  • This programme is run by the author of the Learning Pack of the same name (described later in this leaflet). It will provide a unique assessment tool and approaches to developing early communication skills which will be of relevance to a wide variety of participants (teachers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists) who work with children or adults who have multi-sensory impairments. The presentation enables participants to both use the programme materials with clients and, if they wish, use the associated training package to teach others to use the materials. Participants receive a copy of the learning pack of the same title (normally priced at £40.00) within the cost of the programme.

  • Previously presented over one day.
• Managing Stress in Dispersed Settings

  • Content

  • This course has been presented at a variety of venues around the country. It examines personal and organisational stresses and the impact that stress may have on both the individual and the organisation. In addition opportunity is provided for participants to develop personal strategies for stress reduction. Feedback from previous participants on the course indicates that the presented materials will be of use if you are interested in: Supervising others; assessing stress in the workplace; positivist approaches; time management; improving communication; planning; effective support mechanisms.

• Risk Management Awareness in Learning Disability Services

  • Content

  • Developed from the Learning Pack 'Managing Risk in Services for People with a Learning Disability'.

  • Duration

  • This workshop is designed to run over one day at a venue of your choice.
• Audit in Teams

  • Content

  • A workshop designed around the content of the Learning Pack of the same name (see Publications page). Already piloted with excellent feedback from participants.

  • Duration

  • Piloted over a one-day period.

Custom Provision

A consultant would be happy to discuss any of these workshops in more detail enabling organisations to choose the timing of delivery to match availability of staff and resources and reduce the need to budget for travelling and accommodation costs.

Other workshops can also be developed utilising the extensive experience and expertise of the APLD practitioner network. Costs will be individually negotiated for consultant designed provision.
